Sauna Selfie Saturday

This week played out fairly well, skipped a day at the gym because I pulled something in my back. Ran 6 miles on Thursday and did some much needed shopping at the mall!

Now my back is no longer sore, which means gym time with the husband!

He wore himself out on the bike. I hate that thing, I have a weird mental block about it - somehow it makes me feel like I'm not exercising so I zone out and don't push myself hard enough. I need to be running or walking (or at least on an actual moving bike) I guess because I'm sitting down in a chair pedaling my brain doesn't register it as exercise. I did an incline walk on the treadmill. We took a few minutes for him to catch his breath. I keep telling him to do his cardio after he lifts so he doesn't wear himself out, but he insists it's what he wants to do because he likes to work up a good sweat.

We headed into deadlifts, I am getting much more proficient with the weight I'm currently working with. My husband wanted to work on biceps today so we curled and curled and curled until we could curl no more! And normally I'll do like 1 bicep exercise a week. He trains quite differently than I do. More like a bodybuilder, really. I am not training to look pretty in a bikini on a stage, I simply train to be able to do awesome things. I just like lifting heavy things. I also work on areas that will serve me well during obstacle races, like pullups/grip training, loaded carries or drags. But that's ok - I train in my own way twice a week, then on Saturdays I'll do whatever he wants to do. I figure changing things up and focusing on muscles I'm not used to working on is good for me and will only make me stronger. Having stronger biceps will help out during those big lifts and pulls. Of course we did other things like rows, lat pulldowns, shoulder work on the cable machine, abs, etc. At the end we did a boxing session which was lots of fun.

Then I took a selfie in the sauna. It's just what I do.

Gym Milestones

After 6 months of serious, regular heavy lifting, I finally decided to test my limits on heavy lifting. I did pyramids, so working very close to my 1 rep max here. And yesterday was leg day, so - squats.

Set 1 - 85 to warm up
Set 2 - 135 x6
Set 3 - 165. And that, folks, is my own body weight (give or take a few pounds)

I did 3 at this weight! 4 would have been pushing it. So my absolute 1 rep max might be approaching 180? And now I know I am able to squat my body weight which is a milestone in weightlifting I think.

Set 4 - 155 for 5 reps
Set 5 - 135 for 6 reps
Set 6 - 95 for 10 reps
Set 7 - 75 for 15 reps
Set 8 - just the bar, quick tempo for 15 reps

(Now, after doing all that.... why was I unloading a barbell after a different exercise... and taking a 10lb plate off tweaked my back??? WTH!) It hurts but I don't think I did anything to the spine, it's on the right side only so I probably just aggravated the tissues. All this from a damn 10lb plate!

So yes. I feel pretty awesome, it's not a massive amount of weight but I doubt many chicks in my gym can say they can load up their body weight, put it across their shoulders, and squat.

It's nice to see all these gains and see noticeable strength, and even physical changes as well. I'm not perfect. I will never have a low body fat %, abs, or any of that mess. I love food too much. But for me it's all about performance. What I am able to do in the gym, in everyday life, and on the course is what matters to me.

** Another big milestone - for the first time ever I am able to fit into REGULAR sports bras! Like the Spartan bra pictured above. I have this in a medium, then I have the blue and yellow one in a large. And the large is actually kinda big! Last week I got this sports bra on sale at Dick's in the black and grey color. A large fits me perfect! This is huge for me because I have never even been able to get these bras over my chest in the past. I have always used the Under Armor Protegee which is a zip up. I still use it, just ordered another one in fact, because I do love them for running. But it's nice to know I can go with a "regular" sports bra for lifting - and have more color options for once.

I got my run in already this morning. Been slacking off in the running department, so I'm very glad I got my ass back out there. Just a 3 miler, my GPS wouldn't cooperate this morning so I said to hell with it and ran blind. I guesstimate it took about 28 minutes. No bathroom issues this time but I didn't eat anything beforehand. I'd say not bad for running at 6:40 am with no food or coffee. Good thing I got out so early because they are calling for a heat advisory today. Ouch.

Tough Mudder Virginia 2015

About a year ago I did my first Tough Mudder in Georgia and had a blast. I had to go back for more, and opportunity presented itself to run the Virginia TM last weekend! I was so there.

This was at the Meadow Event Park, about 1.5 hours from my parents house. I came down the night before and crashed with them, then it was out the door at 6am. By the time I got there it was already hot. Like 85 degrees at 8:30 am hot. I was actually very nervous about it. We all know I don't do well in hot weather. Got into the warm up area (this was new) did the warm up thing and then it was into the start corral. Announcer was great just like last year, funny and encouraging. My stomach felt like an ocean was tumbling around inside it, I was already drenched in sweat and hadn't even done anything yet. My original goal was to finish in about 2:30 but I had to write that off. I told myself it was ok to walk, just do whatever I needed to do to survive in the heat.

By the time I got through the warm up stuff it was 9:30, and off we went into the hot sun. Ran past my mom and waved, then it wasn't long until we encountered the inverted wall. There wasn't anything to grab onto so I had to get a boost from someone. Within the first mile I was already taking walk breaks. It was insultingly hot. Luckily TM was on top of their game and added extra water stations, and there was the first one. Right after it was a log carry where you had to navigate 2 walls and not set the log down. Joined a team of 3 gentlemen to carry this tree trunk of a log. A shoulder killer for sure. Up next - Birth Canal. This was an obstacle where you had to crawl underneath a plastic sheet with water on top - so the water was bearing down on you while you were in there. Loved the fact that the water was red, given the name of the obstacle. It was no big thing until someone entered the obstacle behind me and the weight shifted all to the left. It was pretty much crushing me and it took a good bit of strength to move through it. Definitely one of those obstacles not good for people with fear of tight spaces.

I passed my mom again and gave her an update - it was way too damn hot to finish in 2.5 hours. She said Ok, They had this water mister you could run through and I hung out in there while I talked to her. Through a tunnel to the other side of the park grounds, to find "Balls Out", a slanted wall you traversed sideways with ropes to grab onto. This obstacle was all about momentum. Did one similar to it at Battlefrog and had no problems, but this one the ropes were super far apart and I did not get very far before I just started falling off. Oh well! That's what I love about TM, you try your best but no big deal if you can't do something.

Next up, probably the most fun Tough Mudder obstacle. The Mud Mile. It's a series of mud pits followed by hills to get over. There is absolutely nothing to grab onto so you need help to get over. This year they did like 6 or 7 of these in a row and it was a blast. And the cool muddy water felt great too. Almost immediately after was the Beached Whale. Basically a giant inflatable blob with nothing to grab onto except a rope at the top, so once again nearly impossible to get over without help. I got a boost and then somehow got stuck underneath 2 people at the top who were helping others over. It took a bit of yelling at them but eventually they moved and I was no longer pinned.

At this point the course did alot of zig zagging. There was absolutely no shade to be found. Just us running back and forth in the hot sun. Another water station greeted us and then we were at Cry Baby. This is a new obstacle where you crawl through a box filled with tear gas. My strategy for this was to keep moving and only breathe when necessary. It was like the air had suddenly turned into Vicks Vapor Rub. A cooling menthol breeze filled my lungs. This is definitely one of those obstacles where you just shut off your brain and keep your body moving. Because my brain was thoroughly confused. At the end of the chamber there was suddenly a wall. Uh, how do I get out? Help? There was no space big enough to crawl under. Then someone opened a hatch from above and I could climb out. Really should have put an arrow or something in there so people know what to do. This thing cleared out my sinuses. Made the corners of my eyes water just a bit, and my skin did not itch at all. I talked about it with my husband and he says it's definitely a milder form of the gas, I think cause they want to keep everybody moving and not render them unable to continue the course. The kind they use in Army basic training has the potential to mess you up for a little bit. But I say, this was not bad. Next!

Warrior Carry. A gent carried me through this - well most of it. I'm a heavy girl and perhaps he underestimated me. I'm sure the picture is just my pink and purple butt in the air cause he carried me over his shoulder. More zig zagging through a field. Came to find "The Liberator" which is a steep incline wall where you climb up using pegs. The pegs were already fixated into the wall so it was just a matter of finding footing to get you to the next place. Coming up to this obstacle all I heard was "Hey, it's pink tie dye shorts girl!" It was 3 guys who I kept running into. I said "You know what, why don't I just run with yall?" And so it was. I joined Brian, Matt, and .. Greg? Now, they kept me ON POINT!!! I would have done SO much more walking if not for them, just for not wanting to over exert myself in this heat. But after every obstacle we jogged to the next one. They were struggling in the heat as well but we did very little walking.

Arctic Enema! Yes! I seriously needed about 4 more of these on this course. You know it's too damn hot when you approach this obstacle and it's dead silent!!! Usually you hear screams of absolute terror as people plunge into the ice bath. It felt amazing. And Matt's wife was spectating and grabbed a picture of us after we got out. My feet were a little chilly as we stood there but that went away soon as we headed back out into the hot sunny field. Next we found 10 foot walls followed by a ladder wall. Nothing too crazy.

At the top of the ladder (on the left)
We toiled on under the hot sun, to be refreshingly greeted by "King of the Swingers" A new obstacle where you jump off a platform to a bar hanging in mid air, the bar swings forward, you let go and try to ring a bell, and fall 15 feet into water below. The line for this was long, some folks started to chicken out but we all cheered them on until they overcame the fear and did it. The bell in my lane was broken so I just tried to jump out and reach the bar (I did!) and just let myself fall since there was no bell to ring. It was really fun! The water felt great too. This was followed by some more things like a big hay bale stack to climb, a pipe to crawl through, and FINALLY we retreated into the woods for a mile or so. SHADE! I was so happy. There was mud to trudge through, then we came to a clearing to face Funky Monkey. I was apprehensive about the changes, because historically I don't do well with transitions. But here goes. Made the monkey bar climb. Made the switch to the trapeze bar (which moves by the way), Made the switch to the pipe, then once I went to put my left hand on the pipe my right hand slipped and I fell. But I did pretty good to get so far I think. Unfortunately, tore my hand open in 3 places from that fall. It made doing Dead Ringer impossible. But I conquered Everest the half pipe sprint on the first try, even though I needed some help to get over the edge. Skipped Electric Shock Therapy once again, I have an irregular heart beat and don't feel like some silly obstacle is worth the potential risk.

And then it was across the finish line with the group! I picked up my orange headband, and my brand new green headband for completing my second Tough Mudder!
Never saw them after that, but 2 of them did friend me on Facebook so I could see all the pics. I found my mom, rinsed off, enjoyed a beer, then headed home.

Also picked up this shirt

This is so perfect. Gotta represent the state I'm from :)

So - my thoughts on this race. It didn't "wow" me as much as Georgia did last year. The course was kinda "meh", even aside from the heat factor. It was pretty uninteresting, just lots of running through fields and zig zagging through the same areas. The wooded trail towards the end was nice but very brief. Definitely needed some pizzazz in their course design.
Finisher shirts and merch are not as nice - what happened to the Under Armor gear? For the price of this race I would have appreciated the tech shirt like we got last year, and also the good merch for sale.
Free samples were very good, tons of preworkout, hydration, protein, gummies, and even beef jerky to munch on. Water stations were plentiful.
Loved the new obstacles, they do a good job of keeping it fresh every year. They were a good mix of challenging and fun. Great teamwork and camraderie as always.
Photos - what the hell? I waited a whole week before publishing this post, thinking I'd get some action shots of myself. None to be found. I know they took pictures of me, but I guess now TM only takes the liberty of posting the ones they like. Half of them were of their sponsors' products. Booo.

Overall - TM VA had it's ups and downs, I had a great time but it was not quite as amazing as my experience in GA last year. Still, I'm definitely down to run Tough Mudder #3 next year and upgrade my headband to whatever the next color is!

Saturday Adventures

It's Saturday. The first weekend in a long time where I haven't been out of town doing stuff. It's kinda nice.

Today's adventures included -

Gym with my husband!

This included -
40 min on the bike. I hate the bike, I zone out and get lazy most likely because I'm sitting down and it does not feel like a workout to me. I couldn't get my heart rate up high enough to get much benefit from it but he got a nice sweat session in
Deadlifts
Bench press pyramids. Started at 15lb dumbbells and did sets all the way up to 45 which is where I failed. Learned that 40's are a good weight for me now, up from a previous weight of 35 lbs. So - new PR for me on the DB bench press! Then some tricep stuff. I did a "Guess how much weight I can lift?" thing with him, and he was surprised to find that I am working with 65 lbs on overhead presses and 90 on lat pulldowns. I tried to make him do some HIIT as a finisher but he sat on the stability ball for alot of it .. lol. We had some fun with the boxing gloves, hit the sauna and then we were done. We were there for over 2 hours! But it was tons of fun to relax and work out with him, and I feel like we taught each other new things too.
He ended up joining the gym because he wants to make this a Saturday thing for us. I'll simply do my long runs on Thurs/Fri/whatever other day I have off. I'm excited to have some quality gym time with him!

He was wiped out after this workout, we chowed down on some Chipotle afterwards!

We also went to Lowes to pick up some plants. I love having plants around me, both in and outside of my home. It makes me feel like I am truly at home. My cat is a plant eater and will love the indoor palm tree

And I'll love seeing these on my back porch

This has been a good day.

Tough Mother

Well I'm back from my Tough Mudder/Family visit extravaganza

It had its highs and lows.

I'll have my official recap soon, this is more of a "everything else" post

Signed up for Tough Mudder in VA, which was 1.5 hours from my parents so I stayed the weekend at my mom's house. Invited my mom to come along and see what it was all about

Tough Mudder + Mother!

It was hot. Lucky for her there were some huge shady trees just outside the festival area so that's where she spent her time. She brought along newspapers to read while I was out on the course. Due to the heat it took me longer than anticipated to finish. But she had a good time, enjoyed the music and beer they had available. She got to see some of the obstacles that were nearby.

However, no family weekend could be complete without drama. My family is crazy. No really. I had some issues with her, because we planned this weekend over a month ago, but then she told me last minute that she'd be going out to meet her friends at 5pm on Sat and 11am on Sun. And in order to make those deadlines she wouldn't let me stop for food after TM and there was none in her house, so I went until 8pm with no food ... grrrrr...

I dunno what has made me more assertive than I used to be, but if I feel like I have been wronged I speak my mind. So I did. I felt this wasn't fair considering I took time off to come into town and spend the weekend with family, and she was pushing me aside twice for people she could see any time. I was pretty disappointed. Meant for it to be a discussion but she kind of went crazy with it and we had an argument. Not how I intended it to go down. She did eventually apologize and we moved on, but then my brothers were acting out in their own ways, so it was not the most chill of weekends. Still, despite the craziness - which is the norm in my family - I had a good time overall and it's always good to see everybody. Spent some time with my dad, we always get along and he's had a hard life so I cherish the time I have with him.

This trip was filled with many obstacles and learning experiences. Maybe some mistakes were made on both sides, but we worked through it in the end. I'm glad my mom was there to support me at TM, and we also had a nice dinner with my brothers, took a walk downtown, and went to the pool. Dealing with family can be a pain at times, but it's worth it because I can still look past the crazy and enjoy spending time with them.

PR City

Hello!

I am back from a family wedding weekend. It was nice, we even had a minute to drop by the spot where we got married and chill for a bit.

I like this pic other than my weird arm fat crease

I'm off to a pretty good start this week!

Hit a new squat PR yesterday morning, 2 sets of 5 reps at 155 lbs
The rest of my sets were 135. The 155 was very difficult but just wanted to see if I could do it.
This means I could probably max out at my body weight (which varies between 160-170 lbs) and that's pretty cool!

This in addition to my deadlift PR last week makes me rather happy :)

Sadly this morning's run was kind of a failure. I say kind of because I got up early and got out there to do it, but only did 1.5 miles because I had the same bathroom troubles from 2 weeks ago. I'm sure it has to do with the fact that I was out the door within 30 minutes of waking up, and I just disrupted my routine. And I am very very routine about the bathroom. So my body was probably just like WTF are you doing. In the future I need to at least allow my stomach a little bit of time to "wake up" if you will. Yep. Learning!

1 more lifting day and 1 more running day and then it's off to Tough Mudder

Lifting and Life

Man have I been busy.

I worked 8 days in a row, most of which required getting up earlier than normal. Thursday my husband got Lasik surgery - this was kind of a last minute thing but a coworker did me a solid and came in early so I could go to the appointment. Went to the gym, forgot my work clothes, went back home, went to work, left to get my husband and take him to the appointment, did that, came home, went back to work and closed the store. Whew. But he's doing good and can see much better now.

Today we're heading south to go to a wedding and will come back Sunday night.

I feel a little burnt out. But maybe the weekend spent hanging out with family will help.

I haven't run all week, it's been hard to get up early especially when your legs are sore - and it's been rainy every single day. But I did get 2 gym sessions in. Managed to PR my deadlift the other day, now working with 135 for all sets. If I had to guess, my max is probably close to my body weight at this point - 165, 170?

I am feeling the DOMS this week. I guess it comes from switching back to heavy lifting.

Yes, that's kinda how my week has been.

Next week I plan on 2 runs and 2 gym's. Tough Mudder awaits :)

Hello 45's (I missed you)

I'm back to heavy lifting.

... I'm so happy!!!

I backed off the weight for a month or so and switched up my training to less weight and more reps, sets to failure, etc. The goal was just to train in a different way, deload a little bit (which you should do from time to time) and maybe increase my muscular endurance along the way. But I kinda missed lifting the heavy stuff. I swear to god I haven't touched a 45 lb plate in a month. Until today!

135 lb squats!
The same weight I was working with last time I lifted heavy. Next time I squat I may up it to 155. I think I'm ready. Getting closer and closer to squatting my body weight.

Did some other leg accessory work including split squats, something I've been working on during the last few weeks. I hate those so much! But they're good for you - actually just read a T Nation article called How to Lift Forever and it's one of the 5 exercises they recommend. I already do all 5 exercises mentioned so, yay!

Finishers included dumbbell snatches, squat jumps, and burpees. My legs were dead and could take no more by the end of it all.

It just feels so good to be lifting heavy again. I dunno why, I just like to go all out and see how strong I can be. I guess it's more challenging too. Squatting 85 lbs for 15 reps just doesn't feel the same to me.

Thursday means - 95lb bench and 135lb deadlift. Running tomorrow, nice and early this time.
